About the Artist ~ Ruth Stewart

Woven Links Bracelet

Heartfelt Ankle Bracelet |
I specialise in interpreting textile techniques in metal, primarily
silver. I have been immersed in textile arts since early childhood, so it was a
natural extension to apply these skills in metal. I work hard to innovate new
techniques and refine them to ever greater levels of elegance and workmanship,
creating intricately knitted, crocheted and woven wire sculpture. I love to combine
traditional forms in unexpected ways - for example, rendering Irish crochet motifs in
fine silver, then joining them with chainmaille.
I have also begun to combine my textile skills with the traditional
craft of metal-smithing, revelling in the tactile pleasures of forging and
fabricating. While always seeking to be imaginative and unusual, I also strive to work
within the framework of wearability. I believe that comfort and ease of movement are
critical to the enjoyment of jewellery, and choose to see functionality as a
stimulating creative challenge, rather than a limitation. |

I create because I cannot live any other way. I crave the sense of
flow, the moment of bliss when a piece of work reaches the place of harmony. I adore
the incomparable subtlety of colour, texture and light play in natural gemstones. I
gravitate towards subtle, rich hues and organic textures, lines that are fluid,
powerful, uncluttered and sensual. My inspiration comes from the natural world, and
from themes of feminine strength and motherhood. I am of Celtic and Viking heritage
and often incorporate the ancient symbols in my work. |

I live with my husband and two children in the incomparably
beautiful resort village of Whistler, British Columbia.
We have owned property in Whistler since 1993, and in the summer
of 2006 a decade of planning and dreaming came together and my family and I came
to live here permanently.
The natural beauty of the mountains provides endless artistic
inspiration, and we particularly appreciate the opportunity to lead a year-round
outdoor oriented lifestyle, virtually free of the need for motorized
transportation.
Local residents of Whistler, British Columbia and visitors may find regular
updates on galleries and venues in my blog,
Impulsive Arts,
or simply contact
me for more information. |
